TRAGIC MASK WHITH BARNICLES (unique piece)

Although they appear to be pure fantasy, the artworks in Narcissus Quagliata´s "Mediterranean Treasures" series are based in reality. The ancient Greeks produced countless bronze sculptures. However. most ancient bronzes were eventually melted down and exploited for their raw material. Many of sculptures that have survived dis so only because they were lost in shipwrecks, primarily in Roman times, and it is this relics that inspired Narcissus.  Trough his works he challenges assumptions of permanence and timelessness that are often associated with classical statuary, as he depicts the figures overtaken by sea life and transformed by the undersea environment. The artist began the series in the 1980s and he continues to work on it today.
